Goa activists demand Tiger Reserve now

Tiger Reserve

Activists have accused the Goa government of hypocrisy and delay over the long-pending Tiger Reserve in Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary. The Tiger Reserve has been demanded repeatedly, but the state continues to stall despite court directives and evidence of resident tigers.

On September 8, the Supreme Court ordered status quo in Mhadei and referred the issue to the Central Empowered Committee. Two days later, the Bombay High Court at Goa directed the government to stop eco-tourism inside the sanctuary. Still, officials fight against the notification using taxpayers’ money.

Protesters in Panjim called out hollow promises on coal reduction and biodiversity protection. They stressed that tigers symbolize forests, rivers, and the entire ecosystem — yet the government prioritizes resorts and development. We support the activists in demanding a Tiger Reserve, because without decisive political will, India’s conservation story collapses into mockery.
