Dongning tiger
The Dongning tiger, known as Wandashan No.1, has reappeared in the wild in strong health. Rescued in 2021 and released back into freedom, this male is the first tiger China has ever returned from captivity to its natural forest home.
Infrared cameras in Dongning’s Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park show the Dongning tiger sleek and muscular, roaming confidently across restored habitat. GPS tracking confirms he has adapted well, ranging across northeastern China into Russia, thriving in corridors once threatened by deforestation.
This is a rare victory. Tigers should not be symbols of caged profit — they belong in the wild. When humans give space instead of bars, nature proves it can recover. Our feature on Conservation Practices shows that protection works only when ecosystems remain intact.
The Dongning tiger’s survival is a reminder: conservation is not about cages, breeding programs, or zoos. It is about letting tigers stay wild.
