Rajasthan relocation offers hope for tigers

Rajasthan relocation is finally happening. For the first time, seven tigers from Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand will move into Mukundra Hills and Ramgarh Vishdhari. Approved by the Indian tiger authority (NTCA), this effort is designed to break decades of inbreeding and strengthen the state’s tiger gene pool.

Until now, Rajasthan relied almost entirely on Ranthambore to supply its reserves. That short-sighted dependence created a genetic bottleneck. With Rajasthan relocation, the state has a chance to change course and build healthier populations. Mukundra currently holds five tigers, while Ramgarh has seven. By winter, both may together host around 20.

The risks remain—translocation has failed before, as Sariska tragically proved. But the potential here is real. If paired with long-term protection of wild tiger corridors, Rajasthan relocation could mark a turning point. It offers not just more tigers, but stronger, more resilient ones. For once, cautious hope is justified.
