Chhota Matka tiger case 2025

The Chhota Matka tiger case 2025 has reached court. Tadoba’s famed male, once dominant in Ramdegi buffer, is now limping with severe leg injuries, unable to hunt effectively. Viral videos of his condition forced the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court to take suo motu cognizance (means the court takes up a case by itself, without anyone formally filing a petition or complaint) registering a public interest litigation (PIL) and demanding urgent medical care.

Veterinary experts reported swelling, a suspected fracture, and maggot infestation in his foreleg. Field director Prabhu Nath Shukla admitted no improvement and rising livestock kills, intensifying human–tiger conflict. Chhota Matka’s wounds, first sustained in territorial fights — including a deadly battle with Brahma — have worsened during cattle hunts. Experts warn such injuries rarely heal naturally and could prove fatal.

The NTCA discourages capturing wild tigers unless survival is threatened. But officials now admit intervention may be unavoidable. A committee must decide whether to capture him for treatment or leave him to deteriorate. For deeper context on intervention and treatment, see our cornerstone on conservation practices.
