Ananda Ram Deka
Ananda Ram Deka was arrested in Guwahati after Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB – central armed police force in India under the Ministry of Home Affairs) seized a full tiger skin and eight deer skins during a coordinated raid. The operation followed a tip-off and was carried out by the 1st Battalion SSB Sonapur and 64th Battalion SSB Barama, with the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau and the Forest Department, under the supervision of Frontier Headquarters SSB Guwahati.
Deka, a resident of Joytipath Bhatapara in Kamrup (Metro), was caught in possession of the wildlife products and handed over for further legal action. The arrest underlines how Assam remains a crucial transit hub for traffickers moving tiger parts and skins across borders into Southeast Asia and China.
The scale of the trade shows why India’s enforcement must go beyond arrests. Without strong sentencing and coordinated crackdowns, the trafficking chain will continue. Each skin seized is evidence of tiger poaching that strips forests of their apex predator and strengthens international criminal networks.
