Alipore zoo tigress deaths expose cruelty

Alipore zoo has once again shown what captivity really means. Within 24 hours, Rupa, a 21-year-old white tigress born at Alipore zoo, and Payel, 17, transferred from Nandankanan in 2016, died under veterinary care.

Officials cite age-related illness, order autopsies, announce an inquiry, and move on. But the zoo’s failures are long-standing: disputed records flagged by the Central Zoo Authority, a court case over more than 300 animals missing, and a pregnant giraffe that died last month after transfer. Meanwhile, the headlines sell new attractions—a green anaconda, an aquarium, a marine museum—while the basics fail.

This is tiger cruelty dressed as entertainment. Alipore zoo talks progress; animals pay the price. Two tigresses in a day is not bad luck; it is a system exposed. Keep tigers in forests, not behind turnstiles; invest in corridors, not cages; stop pretending death on concrete equals protection.

Alipore Zoo needs transparency, independent veterinary oversight, and accountability that puts animal welfare above ticket sales every day.
