Amangarh poaching case
The Amangarh poaching case has raised alarm across Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. On September 20, forest teams arrested five locals inside Amangarh Tiger Reserve and recovered tiger bones and claws. A reserve that shelters 34 tigers is now under a shadow.
Amangarh covers 95 square kilometers and acts as a buffer to Corbett Tiger Reserve. For years, lack of clear boundaries allowed animals to cross into vulnerable areas, where poachers set traps. Past incidents in 2013, 2016, and 2018 show this is not new—it is a repeating pattern of neglect.
In response, both states launched a joint action plan: Quick Response Teams, e-surveillance, drones, and coordinated patrols. Flag marches will be routine, while sensitive zones will be mapped and reviewed. These steps are overdue. But justice must also be swift and firm for the five arrested. Without real consequences, deterrence collapses. Ending tiger poaching in Amangarh requires more than meetings; it demands that every poacher is held fully accountable.
