water supply
The Udanti Sitanadi Tiger Reserve has launched a new initiative to secure water supply for wildlife, installing 16 solar-powered pumps across ponds that dry out during the summer. Deputy Director Varun Jain explained that the pumps use groundwater extraction through eco-friendly methods, ensuring tigers, leopards, sloth bears, and deer have access to water without venturing into villages. Ten more pumps are expected by December.
The solar program also electrified three anti-poaching camps, providing continuous power for patrolling teams. Supported by the Earth Brigade Foundation, the project saved the state Rs 17 lakh while enhancing both habitat management and security. Officials note a marked reduction in human-wildlife conflict, with only one casualty reported in the past two-and-a-half years.
By addressing seasonal shortages, Udanti Sitanadi shows how practical conservation practices can ease pressure on both people and wildlife. The strategy is expected to aid future translocations of wild buffaloes and female tigers while helping restore the reserve’s ecological balance.
